All about the 7 Days Mt Kilimanjaro Climbing Marangu Route.

Marangu route is the most popular route to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This could be due to the fact that it is less expensive and it is possible to get to the summit in fewer days with a shorter acclimatization period. However this safari allows you to allow you to spend an extra acclimatisation day on the mountain increasing your chances of success on the mountain. You will spend your nights on huts along the route. A cook prepares all your meals on the way and all the equipment and supplies are portered.

  1. Day 1: Arrival (Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport drive to Moshi)

    On arrival at Kilimanajaro International Airport or Arusha city, our driver will meet you and transfer you to Moshi where you will spend the night.

    Overnight will be spent in a hotel in Moshi

  2. Day 2: Moshi Town – Mandara Hut

    Marangu Gate (1980m) – Mandara hut (2700m)
    Hiking time: 5hours
    Distance: Approximately 12kms
    Habitat: Montane forest

    On this day the driver will pick you from Moshi and drive to Kilimanjaro National Park gate which is situated about 50 minutes away. The drive passes through the village of Marangu, which is situated on the lower slopes of the mountain.
    On arrival at the park gate, the hikers are requested to sign in at the Park office and make their final preparations for the climb. Porters will be arranging the equipments, loading their packs, containing the food, water as well as cooking gas ready for the climb.

    At this stage one is advised to check if they have all they need on the way such as drinking water, lunch pack and any extra clothing as the porters ascend faster than the hikers.

    The guides will be at your disposal to assist you with any information you might need or any needs you might have.

    After completing at the park game you will proceed with ascend of the mountain on a cleared ridge trail through the rain forest as you enjoy the scenery and wild animals.

    You will have a first stop at Mandara hut where you will spend your night.

  3. Day 3: Mandara Hut (2700m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)

    Hiking time: 6hrs
    Distance: Approximately 15kms
    Habitat: Moorland

    On this day you will depart Mandara hut, continue on the trail that passes through a short stretch of forest as it goes round the base of the Maundi Crater and finally emerges into the transition from rain forest to moorland.

    At this point it is worth having a short diversion to rush up the rim of the Maundi Crater for your first really impressive view of the Kibo Crater. It will sparkle on a clear day, presenting off her magnificent glaciers in the rising sun from the distance.

    On arrival at the open moorland you will get the chance to see a number of Kilimanjaro’s amazing plants; such as the endemic giant lobelia which can grows up to three meters in height as well as the giant groundsel which can reach five meters in height.
    You will reach Horombo hut after about 6 hours where you will rest for the evening to be ready for the following day.

  4. Day 4: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day Horombo hut (3720m)

    Horombo hut has a capacity of 120 climbers; it is like a small village perched on a small plateau. Atmosphere here is usually adventurous and exciting. It is usually bustling with hikers, porters and guides as you will encounter some ascending and others descending.

    This day and night is spent at Horombo for acclimatisation. On this day you will have a hike towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (which takes approximately three hours up and one hour and fifty minutes down) is highly recommended. The hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization.
    All meals for the day are provided at Horombo hut. You will retire to bed early and get a last good night’s rest

  5. Day 5: Horombo hut (3720m) – Kibo hut (4700m)

    Hiking time: 6hours
    Distance: Approximately 15kms
    Habitat: Alpine desert

    On this day, after breakfast, you will proceed with your ascent into the Alpine desert habitat. You will choose one trail from Horombo. As the recommended route is the lower route which is much easier and nearly an hour shorter and it also passes the last watering point at 4130m. Carry enough water that will take you for two nights or you can also prefer to purchase at Kibo hut
    The summit is now a further 1195m up. You will make your final ascent the same night. On this day you will go to bed early

  6. Day 6: Kibo hut (4700m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) then Horombo hut (3720m)

    Hiking time: 8h to Uhuru, 6h to get to Horombo
    Distance: Approximately six kilometres ascent, and twenty one kilometers descent
    Habitat: Stone scree & ice capped summit

    At 2330hrs wake up, have some tea and biscuits then shuffle off into the night on your way to uhuru peak. This is where the going really gets tough. On the first section, it consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), a good resting spot. It then continues to Gillman’s point (5 681m) located on the crater rim. The section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, needs a great physical and mental effort, one of the most demanding section of the entire route

    You may encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5895m) from Gillmans Point. The at this point will determine how long you will be able to spend enjoying the spectacular moments and taking photographs, then back to Kibo hut. On arrival and relaxation, gather all your gear for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut for your overnight. Later in the evening you enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well earned sleep

  7. Day 7: Horombo hut (3720m) – Marangu Gate (1980m)

    Hiking time: 6hours Distance: Approximately 27kms

    After breakfast you carry on with the descent which takes about six hours, passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. Later drive to moshi where you will be dropped in a hotel or your place of residence where you will relax, have hot shower and celebrate on your achievements.
