Hells Gate National Park
Hell’s Gate National Park is situated about 90km North West of Nairobi and south of Lake Naivasha in Kenya. It is accessible via Naivasha Town on the Lake Road South at a junction five kilometers south of Naivasha. The National park is just fourteen kilometres after the turnoff from the old Nairobi Naivasha highway.
The park is home to a variety of wildlife animals as it comprises mainly of savannah ecosystem. Over a hundred species of birds have been recorded in this park including Verreaux’s Eagles, augur buzzard, vultures, and swifts. Eland, serval cat, zebra, African buffalo, hartebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, and baboons can also be spotted in this park. The park is also home to klipspringer antelope and Chanler’s mountain reedbuck.
Hell’s Gate National Park is well known for its diversity of wildlife and for its spectacular scenery. The scenery includes Hell’s Gate Gorge, Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower columns.
The park is well-liked and mostly visited because of its close proximity to Nairobi and the lower entrance park fees compared to other National Parks. Hiking, cycling, and camping are encouraged within the park even though they are not fenced making it an adventurous activity.
The park covers an area of 68 Km2 and is at 1,900 meters (6,200 ft) above sea level. Its temperature ranges from 20-30 0c and rainfall ranges from 200mm – 700 mm that occurs on the two rainy seasons; long rains – March and April, short rains – November / December
While there is no accommodation in the park, there is a variety of accommodation in Naivasha to satisfy all travelers.
